The Coral Wine Croatia project exists for 10 years and produces ±15 000 bottles per year. It's the first and only underwater wine cellar to age wine from different countries in the EU.
The constant temperature, the water pressure and the lack of oxygen influence the wine aromas and its structure. Ageing in the sea accelerates the ageing of the wine, particularly softening it's acidity and giving it rounded, complex aromas, different than when aged in the conventional wine cellar.
It is a white wine with light yellow color with citrus, mediterranean herbs and stone fruit aromas. Harmonious but still refreshing.
Pošip is a truly local variety that was discovered 150 years ago by a farmer in the village of Smokvica on the island of Korčula. This is also where Black Island Winery is located today and where the best Pošip locations are to be found. There are in total about 200 vineyards in Smokvica located on 40-160 meters above the sea level.
Grapes for this wines are sourced from 25 local family owned vineyards who have been growing grapes for decades. Grapes for Merga Victa are carefully selected from 15+ year old vineyards, from three different types of soil (red, sandy and rocky) in order to preserve the right harmony in wine.
Harvest & Vinification:
Harvest took place towards the end of August, during the night. Manually harvested grapes were then cooled and further selected in the cellar. Pressed lightly. Fermented 3-4 weeks at 15° C, matured for 5 months on fine lees in stainless steal.
