Crljenak - the parent of the famous variety Plavac mali. Indigenous, almost forgotten red grape variety with great potential. Some years ago, the research showed that Crljenak is genetically identical to Zinfandel en Primitivo.
After this discovery, Zlatan otok planted over 50.000 vines of this variety in their vineyards below Mt. Biokovo and in 2007 and therefore were the first winery in Croatia that produced a bottle of Crljenak again.
Zlatan Crljenak is a fresh, aromatic wine known for its dark red colour and aromas of dark-red fruits with pepper on the finish. Full bodied wine with rich structure. Crljenak wines have higher acidity and softer tannins so in general fresher and smoother compared to Plavac mali. The grapes were hand picked and the wine aged in barrique barrels 12 to 18 months.
