Dalmatia

Click to read more about Dalmatia as the wine region..

The southern coastal region of Dalmatia is in stark contrast to the northern coastal regions of Istria and Kvarner. Whereas in the north it is green and hilly, in the south you will find bare and steep mountain peaks. Not only the nature changes but also the climate. Warm summers with lots of sunshine and with a minimum amount of precipitation characterize the region of Dalmatia.

The warm climate does not make it easy for the grapes to survive here. The steep mountains and limestone soil don't help here either. Yet over the centuries the grapes have adapted to the conditions in this area, so well in fact that it is said; the more extreme the conditions, the better the wine. Not all grape varieties are able to survive in these extreme conditions, so you will find mainly indigenous grape varieties in this wine region.

The most famous grape variety from this region is the Plavac Mali. This powerful red grape variety descends from the Tribidrag grape variety, just like the Primitivo and Zinfandel, also called the sisters of Plavac Mali. Also for the Plavac Mali applies, the more extreme the conditions the better the wine is. The best Plavac Mali can be found on the steepest and sunniest slopes in Croatia, such as the Dingač, Ivan Dolac and Postup slopes. On these slopes the grapes are exposed to the "three suns", of which the first sun is the direct rays of the sun, the second sun is the reflection of the rays of the sea and finally the third time sun from the reflection of the white rocks. All these hours of sunshine produce a powerful, full-bodied, fruity wine that is often high in alcohol. This is reflected in Zlatan Otok's Plavac Mali, whose grapes grow on the steep Ivan Dolac slope on the island of Hvar.

Besides the Plavac Mali, this wine region also has a white indigenous grape variety called Pošip. This is one of the oldest grape varieties around the Mediterranean and originally comes from the island of Korčula. Over the centuries, the Pošip grape slowly spread and ended up on the island of Hvar and the Pelješac peninsula, among others. The indigenous terroir of the Pošip grape gives the wine a specific character and a full, fruity taste. Curious about the original Pošip from the island of Korčula, try the Merga Victa Pošip from Black Island Winery. For an organic, more mineral and less aromatic version, Testament Pošip from the Šibenik region is highly recommended, as they won this year's Decanter Award 2020.

In the Dalmatia wine region, in addition to Pošip and Plavac Mali, many other grape varieties can be found including a number of indigenous varieties such as Grk, Vugava, Bogdanuša, Gegić, Babić and the Maraština, Plavina and Lasina of winemaker Ante Sladić.
