      Grape variety: Plavac Mali

Plavac Mali is the best known Croatian grape variety that produces some of the best and most expensive Croatian wines. The best examples are to be found on the peninsula of Pelješac (regions of Dingač and Postup) as well as on the islands of Hvar and Brač.

This autochtone red grape variety is a cross between Crljenak Kaštelanski (Zinfandel) and the less known grape from the island of Šolta called Dobričić. It's recognizable for its small dark blue grapes which also literally translates in its name (plavac = blue, mali = little/small).

      What to expect:

Plavac Mali produces rich, flavourful full-bodied wines that are high in alcohol (12-17%) and tannins. Common flavours are black fruits (blackberries, dark cherries, plums, blackcurrant, raisins,..) accompanied by the pepper and spices. These wines are aged in oak barrels and have excellent ageing potential.

Pair it with red meat (beef/veal), game (venison), grilled meat, meat stew (pašticada), ripe cheeses and dark chocolate

      Best served at 16-18C
