Did you know that Crljenak or Tribidrag are simply local Croatian names for Zinfandel / Primitivo grapes? And, did you know that 2011 was one of the top vintages in Croatia?
Well, here we have a wine from a renowned winery on the island of Hvar - Zlatan Otok from 2011. They were one of the first to plant Zinfandel back in Croatia and all I can say is - I am happy they've done it as now we have amazing wine to drink!
This medium garnet, full-bodied fine is full of flavors and aromas. On the nose, clean, with aromas of black fruits, jammy fruits and sweet tobacco. On the palate strong wine high in alcohol, yet with the medium, rounded tannins and low acidity. Full of dark fruits such as blackberries, prune sauce/ jam, raisins again mixed with quite some smell of tobacco.
I've tried it the next day too and it was delicious. Could even say better. It opened up, softened tannins and strength further, while the flavors remained. Therefore, certainly decant this wine for at least 1-2 h before drinking.
Best served: 18-20 C
Pair it with: Lamb, ribs, veal, old cheese, Portobello mushrooms, puur chocolate
