This grape variety is something you shouldn't miss. Especially not because you don't recognize the name. Crljenak Kastelanski also called Tribidrag in Croatia, is actually better known to the world as Zinfandel in the US or Primitivo in Italy. It originates from Croatia where it's almost extinct but widely spread over the US. Even tough the production in Croatia is minimal, there are some excellent examples to try.
What to expect?
Rich and fruity, full bodied red wines. Deep black and dry fruit flavors such as blackberry, blueberries, raisins or dry cherries as well as sweet spices. Oak barrel maturation flavors such as liquorice, chocolate, leather and smoke tobacco. High in alcohol, yet lower in acidity, with soft tannins.
Pair it with:
Steak or other dark red meat, game, lamb or even tuna steak.
Best served at 18C. Often it's better if the wine is decanted.
